About
This is the story of a very long walk which was actually undertaken during 2003-2004.
Beginning from Cape Finisterre on 31st May 2003, Paul and Helen Webster set out to walk across the continent. This is the story of that walk.
I, Paul, will be blogging the story of the walk, adding a further day to it roughly three times a week, starting in February 2008. Please add your comments to our posts, they may help inspire me to keep writing!!
Remember that on blogs, the most recent post is at the top, so if this is your first visit you might want to look to the oldest posts.

The plan
Inspired by Nick Crane’s Clear Waters Rising, we wanted to do an epic walk lasting upto a year. Initial plans for a north to south through Europe were abandoned when we realised we’d need to be somewhere fairly southern for the winter section, and we eventually settled on a west to east route. Our plan was as follows:
Start at Cape Finisterre in Spain, Europe’s westernmost point. Easy first month or so by following the route of the Camino de Santiago.
Follow the long distance routes along the Pyrenees (a long held ambition in itself)
Various GR routes through the south of France to reach northern Italy
Follow the Ligurian High Route to Tuscany – weather permitting as likely to be getting snowy by this point? Route plans here on were very vague – not sure we’d get this far!
Head down right through Italy to Bari, with the historic hill-towns as compensation if the weather is getting depressing.
From Bari take the ferry across to Igoumenista in Northern Greece.
Cross the Pindos mountains (if possible in winter!)
Continue across Northern Greece to reach Turkey, and finish at Istanbul.
